The Canada Student Loans Program bases the rate of a borrower's monthly payment towards a student loan on the total of all income in a household. In the case of a borrower having an income below the minimum income threshold – or no income, the government requires the borrower’s spouse to pay if his/her income is sufficient enough. If payment is refused, then the government will abandon the borrower and place them in default, and subject them to a grueling process of having to deal with the government collection processes.
