Hello all! I am new to the site...I have been dealing with this collections agent, female, whom I feel has crossed the line. For one...its Saturday morning, at 8am and she calls my mothers house, being rude, commanding my mother to wake me up....a side note for all, I am 38 weeks pregnant!!!....not that this woman cares. She needed me up, awake, and on the phone discussing what I have already discussed with her at least three times (all in one week). I am a student, living with my mother who just opened up a new business...our financial situation is not great right now. There is just no money I can give up to the agency right now as much as I want to and as much I want to get rid of this debt, dont we all? its not that we dont want to pay them off! So today, she crossed the line. She has always had a rude tone and I am always polite...she has asked me before to try to get money from somewhere else....two weeks ago she even suggested that I get a job right then and there, at 36 weeks pregnant. She asked me today, how do you plan on taking care of this child if you cant pay me? I told her it was none of her business....For all she knows I could be giving the baby up for adoption...God knows Im NOT, but for her to get personal like that really pained me. She replied with "yes it IS my business because you owe me money!"...followed by a "whatever! good luck in court" and a hang up. I felt like calling back and cussing but Im not that person...I am trying to calm down and rest up but her harrassment has finally gotten to me. I have discussed my situation with a lawyer and even asked about filing chapter 7...I think its what I will have to do...if there is anyone out there with any suggestions on chapter 7 or any pick me ups to give me after my rude confrontation :( I would totally and happily appreciate them! Thank you !
Love is all that matters...

Please call Johnny!! That's all I can say...your health and your baby's are the priorities, not your loan, Sweetie!

They will do and say anything to upset you...And you do NOT deserve it.

I always tell them to get off their asses, get a real job and stop harassing people with more balls than they ever had for even attempting to get an education in this backwards country. They most likely can't afford our student loan payments on their sh!ttee wages.

Let them think about who and why they're being paid to harass and harangue us. Maybe they'll get fed up when they realize that they're at those crumby jobs because there's sweet f-all else out there for both them and us.

The federal NDP will offer affordable education. University is free in the social democracies of Europe, and their national debts aren't as large as ours or the U.S.A's.

The low wage philanthropists start phoning me before 8:00 am on a morning and sometimes don't stop until after 9:00 pm. I hope they've got pension plans and retraining available to them, because it's a waste of their working lives, really.

Wow! 2bmom: I just joined the forum.  I'm sorry I couldn't be of assistance when you first wrote this.  I was in a similar situation a 7 years ago.  I was pregnant with my 2nd child, working full time for the first time and barely scraping by.  I was getting harrassing phone calls at home and at work.  The guy that called me at work asked me why I was having all these children when I couldn't pay back my student loans.  I can't remember all that he said but I felt that he was insinuating that I should have an abortion.  I was so upset about it.  I was getting pretty serious contractions (way way too early).  I ended up writing a letter to the agency requesting all correspondence to be in writing as it was affecting my health.  They stopped harrassing me for about a year.  I've since been giving them small monthly payments just to keep them off my back.  I wish had someone to help advise me at the time.  I was so broke for so many years that there was no way I could pay for an agency to interceed (I think they charge about $50/m but I could be wrong).  They only bug me twice a year now because I give them 6 months of postdated cheques.  I'm still not able to pay anything but some of the interest and I see bankrupcy as the only option for me.  My husband also has huge student debts.  I hope things have gotten better for you.

I have also had some really rude collection agency agents harassing me. For many years now my husband and I have been barely scraping by. In this country, the income $ amount under which is considered poverty is actually much higher than the government wants to admit. I guess we are what they now call the 'working poor'. One afternoon, while I was staying with my parents, the phone rang. It turned out to be a guy from a collection agency telling me I had to immediately try to find almost $28,000 the pay off the remainder of my student loan including the interest. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to avoid paying off the debt but when you don't have the cash you don't have it and that's all you can do. This guy started saying things like "You receive child tax credit don't you? Don't you think you have an obligation to pay back the money if the government is giving you money?" He actually wanted me to use my monthly child tax credit to pay on the loan! Then he asked if I could take out a personal loan to pay off the student loan. I almost laughed. How was I going to make payments on that if I couldn't make payments on the CSL. He then told me, not asked but actually told me, to get my parents to take out a second mortgage on their house to pay off the CSL! Like that would ever happen. He then gave me 2 weeks to come up with the money and told me it was too late for making payment arrangements (which I couldn't make at the time anyway as I was unemployed). The worst thing was when he said "If you can't pay off your CSL then how can you raise a child!" I was stunned. I told him that was none of his business or concern. I also got the "Yes it is, you owe me money" response. It seems to me that they often try to use scare tactics to get the money from us. I filed the usual forms and sent them 3 times to which I was told each time that they did not receive them. They claimed to have no record of the many times I tried to contact them to find out what other options I might have. They offered no help. I wish I had known where to turn. They told me they would take me to court to get the money. That was 2 years ago and I'd been having problems making payments for a long time before that. I still owe them money. They use to keep my income tax refunds but I have been a stay-at-home mom for the past couple of years so my income has been $0. Well, we'll see what happens next.

You can try reverse-abuse like I did. Ask the person on the other end of the line if he earns enough money at his call centre job to afford your student loan payments him or herself. Then tell them to quit harassing you at 8:10 am, dinner time, 10Pm, and on weekends. Tell them to get a real job instead of harassing poor people on the phone on behalf of profitable banks which are funding the foreign takeover of our economy. But don't whistle into the phone, because they are people too and having to work at lowly-paid, non-unionized work to get by in this Northern Puerto Rico with natural resources being siphoned off by multinational corporations 24-7.

My friend was pregnant and was getting harassing phone calls at work from CSL collection people (the Royal Bank "collections" department).  we both worked at McDonald's.

One day, they called and I answered for her.  I started crying and saying "how can you keep harassing me?  you're so awful, oh---my baby!" then I shrieked, and dropped the phone, and my friend yelled "someone call an ambulance".

She never got another call from them.

Collections people are rude... because they are paid to be rude. Is it a "real job" as someone wrote on here??? Well that depends... do they get a paycheque? If so, then it is a real job. Being a telemarketer I have had that thrown at me many times. What do you consider to be a "real job"? Taking out the trash? Don't get paid for that. Making dinner? Don't get piad for that. Sitting on the telephone and being rude to people AND getting paid for that???? Isn't that some peoples dream job? I am not a collector. I couldn't handle being paid to be rude when I am intrinsically polite. (A true canadian, eh?) But, why be rude to the collectors who are being PAID to do a job? Telling them to F**k off or get a real job is only hurting your case with them... although I do know how rude they are and how frustrating and aggravating it is to be called by them. Even at 1am once....

As I have said before... most collectors use auto diallers. When the phone rings and it is them (I choose any 1-800 #) I pick up and immediately hang up. Messes up the auto dialler and it thinks it has an invalid number. Lately though the only auto diallers that call me are the ones that tell me that "I have won a dream vacation... all I have to do is send them the tax and boarding... blah blah blah". As Johnny is fond of saying... debt is debt... own it, recognize it, admit to it, then tell the collectors you have moved to Africa....

I am brand new to this site and just had an incident today with a CA over stepping their boundaries.. I cannot believe that they are allowed to speak to people this way.  This student loan is back from 1998 and ive slowly been making payments on it in amounts i am able to..and it has varied over the years.

The "gentleman" (very loosely used term here) proceeded today to tell me I have to send them larger amounts. I informed him ive been told my rights by a bankruptcy lawyer and they have to accept what I can send. He then goes on to tell me that he knows my type " 4 kids by 8 fathers, you're easy and nothing but a greedy b*itch who enjoys taking other people's money", "I bet you are even sleeping with your lawyer."    EXCUSE ME??   last week the guy on the phone told me I am not a human being because I can't pay off my debts.

So, where does one go to report issues like this? Or is it even worth it?

Im guessing if they call again and I ask to talk to a supervisor I will only get another rude person on the line.

Yes it is worth reporting.  Each province has its own address to file a complaint. I would also email hrsdc.  Is this a loan that was through a bank? What province... we can help you more if you provide details...   and we're very willing to help!

On the main menu up at the top of each page there is the Student Loan Info heading ... click on the "filing a complaint"  link... should take you to a page with info...

You might consider filing a human rights complaint.  That would take ages to work through but it would be great if more people did this...

It never ceases to amaze me, that with current technology, collection agents still say the things they do. After all, an audio file of a rude collector can find its way into a lawyer's hands, or viral on Youtube within minutes of the conversation ending.

Simply record it, send it to the right person and the agent instantly loses his/her job.

good idea just be  careful about laws regarding recording a conversation -  you may need the permission of the other person....but if a third party is listening that may change things...or if they claim they are recording the conversation....
