I had student loans of more than $20,000 (between the Canada Student Loan, CIBC and provincial loans) after graduating in 1998. I made payments to CIBC, but fell behind sometime in 2001. Eventually, I was getting calls and letters from CBCL. Without going into detail, let me just say that the people who work for CBCL are among the most rude and intimidating people I have ever dealt with. I honestly have no idea how these bullies sleep at night.
At this point – early 2003 - I signed up for credit counseling that was based in the US (it was the only such agency listed in my city’s phone directory). The people were really great, but it turned out the fees they were charging were ridiculous and CBCL wouldn’t deal with them. Then I was sued by CIBC because I couldn’t meet the demands of CBCL (i.e. paying $2,500 in three days to resume monthly payments of $200). All I got was this registered letter from a lawyer in my city that was all legal jargon that I didn’t understand. I didn’t even understand that I was technically sued in court in another province and a judgement was made against me by CIBC for over 12 grand. My work also told me that my wages were going to be garnished. At this point, after being totally beaten down and made to feel worthless, I started to freak out and wondered what I was going to do.
That’s when I stumbled onto this site and learned I wasn’t alone in my situation. That was of great consolation in a strange way. I eventually contacted John Leblanc with the CFW group and he was a lifesaver! Before doing anything, he made me feel my situation was nothing to be ashamed about and that I’m not a deadbeat because I couldn’t meet the demands of CBCL. He helped me sort out this mess and actually asked me what I could afford to pay each month. Imagine that – making payments that actually fit into my budget!
So John went to bat for me with CIBC’s lawyers and the results gave me total peace of mind. John was able to explain everything to me in language I could understand and in a tone that was neither condescending nor belligerent - all of which was new to me. CIBC and CBCL no longer contact me, but must work through John. CIBC withdraws the payments once a month and so far so good. My file will be revisited every six months.
The fees that John charges for his services are completely reasonable and I totally recommend that anyone faced with a situation like mine contact him immediately! He is a miracle worker! His skills and knowledge in the collections business, banks, student loans and wellness are a perfect match for anyone who thinks there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Trust me – there is!
