On Thursday, October 14, 2004, Alexa McDonough, former Federal NDP party leader let her views on post-secondary education be known.  Alexa is the NDP critic on post-secondary education.

The one interesting part is that she seems aware of our situation.  I've taken out a paragraph of interest.

"We absolutely need to recognize that we have to freeze tuition fees and it is going to take some funding to do that. We must improve the student aid programs as well as the student debt relief programs, instead of constricting what is available to students by changing the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act to put them at an even greater disadvantage when they are in major financial difficulty through no fault of their own."

For the whole speech, check out this link : http://www.alexahfx.ca/index.cfm?p=issues\speech.cfm&id=173 - http://www.alexahfx.ca/index.cfm?p=issues\speech.cfm&id= 173

Finally, a voice in parliament!!

I just did some research over on ABC Theorists, answering a forum post inquiring about the 10-year no-bankruptcy period. It seems http://studentloans.abctheorists.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=XForum&file=viewthread&tid=33 - Ms. McDonough is doing a fine job.

I just emailed Alexa McDonough to let her know that she has some support for her advocacy of reform of the bankruptcy and insolvency laws as they pertain to student loans and for her following up on Bills C236 and C237.

I'd suggest that others do the same if we want her to know that there are many here among us.

Alexa should definitely be congratulated for her stand on access to education.

In recent years, it's been discouraging to see the NDP relegated to near irrelavance.  How encouraging to see them make some gains in June's vote, but better still to see that http://www.cbc.ca/greatest/ - Tommy Douglas can still win an election in this country .

Unfortunately, Douglas was not available for comment.

I saw that!! I get my Globe & Mail headlines emailed to me...after seeing the pitiful results of the Dutch version of that same show (Pim Fortuyn, the anti-immigrant MP who was murdered by an animal activist a couple of years ago, was voted Most Important Dutchman during the TV finale. But the phones kept ringing after the show, voting for William of Orange, who, based on those votes, actually won.), it was quite a relief to see common sense prevail in my homeland!!
