This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities have been forced to cancel programs and layoff hundreds if not thousands of full-time and contract instructors.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment.

I have an old student loan I've hidden from for years (on advice from a debt counsellor, a lawyer and even Johnny -- long story). I graduated in 2000.

I am 64 and retired but my husband inherited some money in 2005 and insisted on putting some real estate in both our names. There is some income from one of these but it does not exceed our personal exemption.  The only problem I've had since I stopped talking to the collectors (in 2003, I believe) is that CIBC scooped some money from an account a year or two ago. It wasn't much so I just stopped using the account.

I don't owe anyone else money except for a computer course for disabled people (federal government subsidized) which  I started in 2004 but had to quit for health reasons. I did all the paperwork to get out of it (doctor's report, etc.) and was told (twice) by the government clerk in charge of the program that I was free and clear of any indebtedness. Even so, I get billed for this course from the feds every month and no talking to anybody changes a thing. I stopped opening them years ago.

Anyway, my question is this: if I access my credit report will I stir up any monsters? I certainly do not want anyone to notice I'm still alive if I can avoid it.
